Butekyo Breathing Method

What is it?

More than 40 years of research have produced the Buteyko Method, which can recondition and normalise breathing and restore the body's most important function.

Breathing is the only vital function that we can consciously control, but for most of the time we let our habitual, unconscious behaviour dictate the way we breathe. In fact, we are generally unaware of the way we are breathing or the effect it may be having on our health. Breathing serves many objectives: respiration, blood chemistry balance, communication (talking, singing, sighing), relaxation, concentration and meditation to name but a few.

There are many physical, mental and emotional influences on the way we breathe, and sometimes these can upset the balance and harmony of the systems which enable us to respond to all the different situations and challenges we face every day. We can “learn” bad breathing habits which can cause or aggravate a whole host of problems, sometimes with quite severe consequences but we can also learn to normalise our breathing and get it more in tune with the body’s requirements.

Who is it for?

Adults and children who are experiencing breathing related health problems, such as asthma. Also if you are anxious, fatigued, burnt out and feel as if you are 'running on empty', then having your breathing assessed could identify an important aspect of the cause of your symptoms. Bad breathing has been shown to be directly related to a host of 'medically unexplained' symptoms including: chest pain, tension, blurred vision, dizzy spells, feeling confused, shortness of breath, bloated stomach, tingling feelings, palpitations and anxiety.

He has adapted his “OneTwoBreathe” program for children, making it a fun, creative way for children to learn how to understand why they have asthma and what they can do about it.
'Kicking asthma can be fun!' is the programs central message.

What conditions respond

The Buteyko Method is not just a highly effective treatment for asthma, it can be used to reduce symptoms of any breathing related illness. Professor Buteyko identified over 150 disorders that can be resolved by correcting the breathing including, COPD, Emphysema, Hayfever, Allergic Rhinitis, Panic Attacks, Sleep Apnoea, Insomnia, Snoring, High blood pressure, eczema, migraine, sinusitis, rhinitis and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

What to expect from a consultation

Kim offers an initial breathing assessment, analysing all aspects of your breathing. Scientific measurement of breath rate and breathing chemistry as well as study of your respiratory reflexes and diaphragmatic activity, are aspects of the evaluation that define Kim's approach as setting new standards in breathing training and education. The 'OneTwoBreathe' breathing rehabilitation program for adults and children typically consists of four sessions over four to six weeks.
